This is a full-time (4Ohrs/week) benefited position dependent upon continued funding.

The Making Accessible and Effective Systems for Teacher Readiness Outcomes (MAESTROs) Project aims to improve retention and completion rates for Hispanic and low-income students on the academic pathway to become teachers, and prepare these students for urgent local and statewide teacher workforce needs. The MAESTROs Project Assistant will report to the MAESTROs Project Coordinator, and to the Project Directors, the Principal Investigators of the CSUMB Title 5 HSI Grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.


Under the general supervision of the MAESTROs Project Coordinator and Project Directors, and the Dean of the College of Education (COE); the COE H?I Academic Advisor/Counselor (AASPC) advises, interviews, and counsels students, makes determinations regarding student eligibility for COE degree and teaching credential programs such as the campus-based Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP), and post bac teaching credential programs; contributes to the coordination, planning and implementation of COE teaching credential program recruitment; exercises judgment and utilizes knowledge and expertise to recommend solutions to problems and changes in program policies and procedures, University and major requirements, matriculation policies, course and program pathways, and California State Credentialing requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Student/Academic Counseling

  1. Provides information, advice, and assistance to students regarding specific requirements for College of Education Programs, and requirements for admissions to E&L Department integrated and post baccalaureate credential programs.
  2. Exercises judgment and utilizes knowledge and expertise when working with students, faculty, and administrative personnel when recommending solutions to problems and/or changes in program policies and procedures.
  3. Responsible for providing academic advising for students enrolled in on campus CSUMB’s programs to ensure that students achieve timely completion of undergraduate degrees that lead to teaching credential, and integrated degree/credential programs.
  4. Utilizes interviewing and counseling techniques when working with students on, for example, their academic progress toward degree or degree/credential. Guides students in creation of two year and four year plans.
  5. Provides students with information on creating meaningful educational plans. Case-manage and monitor students’ academic progress toward degree/credential completion and graduation.
  6. Reviews academic students’ coursework to determine eligibility for the granting of College of Education undergraduate degrees and admissions to Education & Leadership (E&L) credential programs.
  7. Assesses candidates’ status towards meeting all degree requirements, and credential requirements when appropriate.
  8. Collaborates with other campus-wide advising efforts, and with student support services in the retention of students, e.g., academic probation and at-risk students.
  9. Participates in campus-wide advisor training and workshops, and participates in student support services staff meetings, as deemed appropriate by the Dean of the College of Education in consultation with the Director of the Center for Advising, Career and Student Success.
  10. Participates in electronic note keeping (i.e., Insight software) that aligns with practices implemented by CSUMB’s Student Support Services personnel.
  11. Evaluates existing services and student needs by attending and participating in CSUMB meetings and collaborative meetings with partner institutions.
  12. Evaluates and makes recommendations for existing services and student needs by attending and offsite workshops and conferences.

Student Recruitment, Outreach, and Orientation

  1. Coordinates with E&L department outreach, advising, and evaluation procedures with campus outreach efforts and orientation events on campus and in the community. Serves as a spokesperson during outreach efforts and orientation events.
  2. Collaborates with other campus-wide advising, recruiting, and orientation efforts.
  3. Participates in advisement related activities and meetings, Orientation/Registration, University outreach efforts, and representing the E&L department at major fairs, preview days and open house, as well as relevant statewide and national conferences and/or regional meetings.
  4. Maintains and updates the Advising and Program related information on the College and department websites, and other multimedia and social networking sites (e.g., Twitter, Instagram) for teacher credential programs in the COE.
  5. Provide proactive and consistent “intrusive advising” to ensure students successfully remain on-track, and connect students with support services Initiate ongoing contacts with the students (at least four per semester) to informally discuss how the student is generally doing; follow up on class attendance, counseling appointments, and tutoring sessions, and coach students on “help-seeking behaviors” .
  6. Advocate, support, and guide students to appropriate resources that will enhance the academic success of the program participants.

Program Data and Curricular Analysis, Coordination and Maintenance of Student Records, Course

Enrollment and Registration

  1. Maintains students’ advising files, transcripts and records; maintaining strict confidentiality. Manages the collection, compilation and dissemination of information about majors, and the Integrated Teacher Education programs (ITEPs), as well as post-bacc credential programs and student services in College of Education programs.
  2. Coordinates with Academic and Student Services units on campus to monitor and maintain accurate and up-to-date student admissions, enrollment, and records for COE credential programs. .
  3. Consults with Principal Investigators and Program Manager, and Administrative Support Coordinator (ASC) regarding credential candidates’ progress in the credential program.
  4. Coordinates course enrollment and registration with Principal Investigators and Program Manager, and CSUMB Advising Center director and staff for new and continuing students.

College Program Coordination, Development, Implementation, and Governance Participation

  1. Coordinates the planning and implementation of special programs offered by the College of Education, such as the Teacher Pathway Program and the ITEPs, and any new special programs (e.g., First Year Seminar, Living Learning Program) offered by departments within the College of Education (COE), in collaboration with Department Chairs, Program Coordinators, and faculty.
  2. Provides information and assistance to faculty and administrative personnel regarding specific requirements for College of Education (COE) Special Programs such as the Teacher Pathway and Integrated Teacher Education Programs, and pathways and requirements for admissions to E&L Department integrated and post baccalaureate credential programs.
  3. Plan, develop and implement COE Program goals and services, and where appropriate, ensure that goals and services are in accordance with grant requirements.
  4. Plan and coordinate data collection and analysis to monitor credential program impact and effectiveness.
  5. Collaborate with partner institutions in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of collaborative programs such as the Teacher Pathway Program (TPP).
  6. Coordinate with appropriate units within the University in the development of Credential programs and services to meet the goals of COE Special Programs.
  7. Develop and maintain partnerships and communications with community groups, community-based organizations, Monterey County Office of Education, and applicable agencies, school districts, community colleges, and non profit organizations supporting the COE Credential Programs to provide educational opportunities and academic pathways to students in CSUMB’s Tri-County service area.
  8. Establish and maintain effective and positive professional relationships and communications in order to work collaboratively with COE program related faculty and staff, other Colleges and units at CSUMB, and partner community colleges.
  9. Provides work direction to assigned student assistants.
  10. Coordinates with E&L Credential student services staff (E&L admissions and credential analyst).
  11. Participates in the governance of the LS and Education & Leadership Departments, as appropriate.

Other Functions: Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Compensation and Benefits:

The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The hourly range for this position is $22.98 per hour, dependent upon experience. This is a non- exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA, 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation positions are at will employment.
