Working Title: Athletic Academic Support Coordinator

Campus Security Authority: Yes. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.” A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the University Police who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority.

Designated Personnel: No. A “designated position” means this position could potentially be required to work (depending on the event) during an emergency closing. This is NOT a “designated position.” 

Statement of Economic Interest: No. This position does NOT require a Statement of Personal Economic Interest.

Restricted Position: No. A restricted position would be subject to availability of funding. This is NOT a restricted position. 

Chief Objective of Position:

The Coordinator will be a member of the Center for Academic Success Team and provide support for a full range of retention efforts carried out by the Director of Academic Success Services. The primary purpose of this position will be to effectively plan, develop, and implement high quality student success programs designed to enrich the academic success and retention of student athletes, with emphasis on first and second year students utilizing athletic academic coaches, study hall monitors, peer mentors, subject area tutors and writing associates. This position will provide support to student-athletes and their transition to college, motivating them to be responsible and accountable for their academic performance.

Work Tasks:

  1. Provides recommendations to the Director of Academic Success Services regarding new initiatives and programs at Christopher Newport University to enhance student retention and graduation rates specifically for student athletes. 
  2. Responsible for the development and daily management of Study Hall including: determining need and hiring of study hall monitors, completion of employment paperwork, establishment of study hall sessions, assignment of student athletes to study hall, development of an effective study hall model, documentation of study hall attendance, and ongoing assessment of effectiveness and outcomes of study hall. Submission of regular reports to the Director regarding status of Study Hall and student athletes assigned. 
  3.  Collaborate with various campus resources offices to create and implement strategies to improve academic performance and retention of student athletes. Maintain reports and communicate regularly with CNU’s athletic coaching staff regarding the academic performance and progress of student-athletes. 
  4.  Consults with supervisor and coordinates athletic support academic coaching program by determining need, advertising and hiring of academic coaches, completion of employment paperwork, documentation and scheduling. Responsible for team assignments, training and scheduling of athletic academic coaches. 
  5.  Develops and facilitates curriculum and programming for CNU student athletes designed to support academic success and retention. This may include developing and organizing life skills programming for student-athletes, facilitating sessions, group exercises and small group discussions. This position coordinates annual professional speakers/presenters (twice per year). 
  6.  Identifies student-athletes with academic deficiencies or those at risk of failure in courses and provides them with assistance or referrals to academic support / tutoring resources, academic advising and/or mentoring resources. Set up one-on-one regular meetings and develop academic success plans for student athletes identified as high risk. Such students will be determines collaboratively with coaches, student GPA and other factors. 
  7.  Responsible for providing academic support and intervention to student athletes referred via Captains Care or other on campus referrals. Offers “drop in” hours for students who need immediate assistance with academic difficulties.
  8. Maintains a caseload of “at risk” athletes to include athletes on academic probations, athletes returning to Christopher Newport following a suspension, and athletes with GPAs that fall below a CUM of 2.4.
  9. Responsible for conducting outreach, providing academic support services and developing interventions to support student athletes who have been identified through campus referrals, midterm grades, and on academic probation. 
  10. Responsible for the retention of student athletes that have disassociated from their team. Leads a task force composed of various campus entities and athletic coaches to determine strategies for the transition and retention of disassociated athletes to traditional campus life. Increase the retention rate of this population to at least 75%.
  11. Meets regularly and collaborates with the Associated Athletic Director to ensure open communication and proper coordination of athletic academic support services.
  12. Collaborates with fellow Coordinators of Academic Success Services and the Director of Academic Success to develop and facilitate workshops designed for CNU students as a whole. Special focus to be the development of workshops designed for student athletes and services designed for student athletes that disassociate from athletic teams after coming to CNU. 
  13. Attends athletic events and competitions for all teams specifically Family Weekend, Homecoming, and key competitions such as playoffs or finals. Collaborates with athletic department on recognition of all academic awards both on conference and NCAA levels. Responsible for planning and coordination of academic recognition and awards ceremonies for athletes who demonstrate excellence in the classroom.
  14. Serves as an instructor for College 140, “The Transitional Learner” and College 150, “The Intentional Learner.”
  15. Compiles and manages documentation of all Student Success outreach and intervention efforts including but not limited to: Captains Care Referrals, student meetings with Center staff, SUM, special referrals from Student Affairs and other campus offices, email contacts, phone follow-ups, and Faculty Adviser concerns. Provides reports to the Director as needed. 
  16.  Tracks official academic progress associated with eligibility, progress toward degree, retention and graduation rates. 
  17.  Prepares various reports and analysis denoting progress, adverse trends, and determines appropriate action plans in consultation with the Director of Academic Success and athletic staff. Particular focus will be paid to student athletes who have not registered for spring or fall classes. 
  18.  Researches, develops, and implements resources and/or changes to ensure the best experience for our student athletes. Stays up to date on any current trends in the field of student success. Makes data driven recommendations to the Director. 
  19.  Meets with prospective student-athletes and their families during official and unofficial visits to campus to discuss the goals, vision, philosophy, and expectations of the university, the athletics department and CNU’s academic support program. 
  20.  Works with coaches during recruitment to meet with candidates to discuss CNU academic curriculum options and academic support services available. Assist coaches with orientation registration process. 
  21.  Assists with marketing for the Center for Academic Success and services provided. Serves as department representative and support for annual events such as Welcome Week, Setting Sail, Changing Tides, Commencement, and Getting Started Week. Conducts informational presentations for students, parents, and new faculty as well as conducts training sessions for new student workers and faculty in regards to resources and services offered by the staff of the Center for Academic Success. 
  22.  Responsible for developing and maintaining exemplary relations with all levels of the athletic division. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. 
  23.  Responsible for developing and maintaining exemplary relations with all constituencies both in and outside the Center for Academic Success. Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Projects a positive image of the department and university to all constituents. Provides a high quality of executive support to the Center for Academic Success to meet the organizational objective. 
  24.  This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty. 
  25.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA’s) required:

Working knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations, and ability to learn Conference rules and regulations. Skills in advising, counseling, or instructing college students. Ability to draft statistical and narrative reports as requested by administration. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Excellent computer skills to include data management of progress reports, grades, study hall and other academic information to support the delivery of academic support services. Ability to work a variety of schedules and hours including weekends and holidays consistent with the needs of the position. Proven ability to relate well with students, coaches, university staff and faculty.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA’s) preferred:

Significant knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association and Conference rules and regulations. Strong understanding of and practical experience with major issues concerning student-athlete welfare and conduct, academic performance and enhancement, issues and interventions related to student athlete retention and persistence, the value of intercollegiate athletics, and the relationship between intercollegiate athletics and higher education. Demonstrated knowledge of academic study skill strategies designed to support college students. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs to include Word and Excel. Experience with Google email, documents and forms. Familiar with computer technologies such as databases, internet, spreadsheets, and tracking systems. Excellent communication skills both written and oral. Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion according to the Family education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ability to manage priorities with competing deadlines and achieve needed outcomes.

Required Education:

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Educational Psychology, Higher Education with emphasis on College Student Development, College Student Personnel, Sports Psychology or a counseling based related field, or a Bachelor’s Degree with experience that equates to an advance degree.

Preferred Education:

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Educational Psychology, Higher Education with emphasis on College Student Development, College Student Personnel, Sports Psychology or related field to include 18 graduate level credits in Counseling, Educational Psychology, College Student Personnel Services, College Student Development or a related Counseling-based discipline.

Experience Required:

Experience with Intercollegiate Athletics. Experience developing, implementing and assessing academic support programs/interventions for college students. Demonstrated experience working one-on-one with college students in an academic coaching or counseling support related position. Familiarity with FERPA guidelines. Experience in managing multiple projects and priorities concurrently. Experience collecting and using data to develop retention and/or intervention programs and assessment reports. Supervisory experience to include daily management of time sheets, scheduling and professional evaluations. Experience managing a departmental budget.

Experience Preferred:

Significant experience in higher education including experience providing academic support for intercollegiate student athletes. Experience teaching at the college level. Experience in a University learning or academic coaching center. Experience with first-year student athlete programming. Experience teaching academic study skills / strategies in the college environment. Experience in higher education that enhances the candidate’s ability to assist “at-risk” student athletes in the college environment.
